Five things to break you out of your creative funk

In our heart of hearts, all of us want to make something. We want to feel like we are not only capable of but actually bring forth something into this world. But more than not, our fears, anxieties and insecurities stand in our way. Well if that's you, here are some things for you to consider:

  1. A chaotic guide to making stuff instead of doomscrolling is a video from one of my favourite YouTubers with some quirky ideas to get the brain juices flowing
  2. Austin Kleon's Steal Like an Artist has been out more than 10 years and I still find it as relevant as ever.
  3. If you feel really blocked and can handle some "woo-woo" then Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is worth trying out. I know it helped me.
  4. If you have not watched Kirby Ferguson's Everything is a Remix, I'm not sure where you've been. Its central thesis is that all art is recombination. So combine away!
  5. And if you need some gentle ass-kicking, then may I suggest Steven Pressfield's The War of Art. It is like listening to a gruff boomer who is honest, means well, and is rooting for you. Understanding the concept of the Resistance has been crucial for me.
